The Joy of Math

in Math | April 12th, 2010 3 Comments

If math went over your head in high school or college, here’s a great way to rediscover what you missed. in late january, steven strogatz, a professor of applied mathematics at cornell university, began blogging mathematics for the new york times. and his whole goal is to show you, the reader, the joy of math. or, as he describes his mission:

I€™ll be writing about the elements of mathematics, from pre-school to grad school, for anyone out there who€™d like to have a second chance at the subject €” but this time from an adult perspective. it€™s not intended to be remedial. the goal is to give you a better feeling for what math is all about and why it€™s so enthralling to those who get it.

Starting this week, this blog will be delving into thegreat ideas at the heart of calculus. you canjump on board right here. thanks to gregg for the heads up on this one.

While personally that outfit isn’t my style, i have to give the girl props- i love her style! so chic and stylish and very on trend with the high heeled oxfords. i love that skirt too. she just seems like a cool person to hang with anyway i just ha to comment- and i love that she took a risk with the hair, though i personally would never tease my hair that high. one of my favorite looks on campus for sure though! I liked the interview too- very good read. :) keep up the amazing job.

Love her style and hair! and she shops a places the kids can afford

Hannah

I love her confidence! between the color combination and the hair, she looks unique and stylish.

(also, i agree with her about laziness – it’s one of my pet peeves, too! )

While i personally think that style only works for rail-thin girls, her color combo is adorable and her heels are fantastic, although i can’t imagine schlupping around campus in three inch heels.

It is very interesting to see how directly her hometown affects her style choices – gives a true sense of individuality, plus, she seems like a very chill person to hang out with.

Breanna

Definitely one of my favourite looks on campus so far. i love the shoes, i want them! and shes so tall and slim, i envy her.

Leia

I think she is the best ‘look’ you have featured so far!

Rachael

Best feature in This series so far! she looks adorable, and i love the colour combinations – i wouldn’t have thought bright green and a purple skirt would have worked so well together. she seems like a fun person too after reading your interview with her. great post!

Annie

I like her style, even though it’s very different from my own. the hair is risky but she pulls it off well! also, i can’t walk around the campus with any heels whatsoever so the shoes aren’t for me, though i must say they go wonderfully with the whole outfit.

9 February 27th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Tanya

Certainly the most creative look that you have featured so far! fierce hairstyle :)

Lalalina

Love her outfit! she can so pull off the retro look. not really feeling her hair. the side “snookie poof” isn’t really doing it for me. I like how she has a different sense of style then anyone else featured in This series. i also wanted to say i love how This series has become more frequent. seeing fashion on real college girls makes looks a lot more accessible in my opinion. great work!

Chelsey

The outfit is so cute on her! not a fan of the hair, but uniqueness is a good thing! :)

12 February 27th, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Charlotte

I think she looks fierce! the problem is i think her style is flattering for the very slim body types- do you think fuller figured women could pull the look off?

Love the looks on campus series!

Lyd

Loving the colour combination, another favourite of mine :)

14 February 27th, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Kate

I love her outfit! This is my favorite ‘look on campus’ so far. but the hair is a bit much for me. you didn’t make any example outfits with This one :-(

15 February 27th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

Jeanie

This is the only look on campus i actually really loved. the colors are so cute together and while i personally wouldn’t be able to pull off the hair, it works so cute with her outfit!

Karissa

This girl definitely stood out! good pick!

17 February 28th, 2010 at 3:02 am

Allie

Her hair looks dorky. it doesn’t suit her. I like her top though…

18 February 28th, 2010 at 8:51 am

Renn

I don’t like the hair, but the rest of the outfit looks great. the shoes are amazing, wish i had a pair of those. and the skirt is also really pretty.

What is that thing on top of her head. also, there are plenty more stylish people at yale worthy of being featured on This blog. just saying.

While i do love her hair and her style, my one criticism is of her glasses. she’s clearly a very intelligent girl, so why not ditch the generic frames and go for something more…literary?

Margo m

I love her style! the hair is a little different–and that is seriously a good change from the usual. i love how you can change something so ordinary like a pony tail, or a poof (i am sure it has a better name) to something more interesting and personalized.

Giulia

Great sense of style, i love her hair! i don’t agree with her on the trenitalia thing, though…i travel with trenitalia every day to my university and it’s a mess! they’re often late and the cars aren’t comfortable at all! but she’s right about the landscape :)

Hey, there were no tracy inspired looks,i was looking forward to that ! !

Her style is so simple yet feminine. ooh, i love her hair… reminds me of jersey shore’s snookie but it looks nice on her instead:) i got to give major props of pulling the hair off.
