5 Celebrity Clothing Lines Worth the Hype

Written by Liza – University of Minnesota 23 Comments

Whether it’s a good idea or not, celebrities love to have a hand in every possible arena. from recording contracts to fragrance deals to hair extension lines, if they have the opportunity to further their status, they will do so without question.

Unfortunately, because of this, many celebrity crossover lines and products are sub par. on the other hand, however, there are some celebrities who have done it right. intrigued? keep reading for our five favorite celebrity clothing lines.

Elizabeth & James by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Promotional photos from Elizabeth and James Spring ’09 Collection.

Self described as embodying an “eclectic lifestyle by blending uptown and downtown elements with casual and traditional style,” mary-kate and ashley olsen’s elizabeth and james collection is “trend conscious, yet timeless. ”

Named after the twins’ brother and sister and launched in 2007, elizabeth and james features clothing, shoes, accessories and a newly added menswear branch. as the olsen’s third venture into fashion, elizabeth and james is a pseudo-luxury brand, priced lower than their high-end collection the row, and priced higher than their mary-kate and ashley line for discount stores. popular with the celebrity set, elizabeth and james designs have been seen on dakota fanning, kristin cavallari, and jessica simpson, just to name a few.

For locations on where to buy elizabeth and james, check out their website, or shop online at shopbop.

Why we love it

Ever since i first heard the words, “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times…actually it was bedtime,” i have been a mary-kate and ashley devotee. in the 90s, mk&a were the girls who felt like your best friends. i grew up watching the girls first on “full house,” then “two of a kind,” and finally, “so little time. ” beyond their enviable acting careers, however, the girls have grown into fashionistas in their own right, making headlines with their unique hippie-grunge-bohemian style.

Naturally, when i heard that the twins were teaming up to create their own high-fashion line, i was intrigued. today, i can almost always look to elizabeth and james for some fashion inspiration. ruffled dresses? oxfords? boyfriend blazers? they’ve got it all, and their pieces are always styled in a way that looks both effortless and chic.

Mary-kate and ashley’s collection of smart, modified-basics is totally crave-worthy, and always on my radar… though their pieces are not so college-budget friendly. so how to get it? whether you save for months, score a super-marked-down piece on shopbop or opt for the forever 21 knock-offs, if you want it, there’s a way to posses a little bit of mk&a style.

William Rast by Justin Timberlake

Promotional Photos from William Rast Spring 2009 Runway

William rast is a fashion collaboration founded by justin timberlake and his best friend trace ayala in 2006. the line’s name comes from the names of justin and trace’s grandfathers–”william” being justin’s, and “rast” being the surname of trace’s.

Though primarily a premium denim collection for both men and women, william rast also includes tough leather jackets and relaxed tops and tanks. a fusion of hollywood glamour with justin’s southern roots, william rast has been favored by celebrities like vannessa minnillo and timberlake’s leading ladies, cameron diaz and jessica biel. interested? you can find william rast online!

Why we love it

Who would have thought that everyone’s favorite boy band member would turn out to have such amazing style? (or be such a hottie? ! ) jt always looks put together and smooth.

Full disclosure: i was totally surprised when this line wasn’t a complete disaster. justin did it right though: urban edge and country comfort are perfectly matched within his collection.

As someone with a penchant for designer denim, i can personally tell you that justin’s jeans (tee hee! ) are some of the best. go a size or two up in a pair of william rast jerri ultra skinny jeans and you’ve got the perfect casual boyfriend jeans–great color, impeccable distressing, and staying power. want to make your butt look cute? go for his belle flap pocket flares. though the jeans are pricy at $165 and up, if you’re on a budget, no worries– william rast is often featured on sample sale websites such as hautelook and rue la la, and is an almost permanent fixture in nordstrom rack stores nationwide.

Twenty8Twelve by Sienna Miller

Promotional Images from Twenty8Twelve. com.

Twenty8twelve is a contemporary luxury brand by model-turned-celebrity-turned-actress sienna miller and her older sister, savannah. announced in 2006 with much anticipation from the fashion community and officially launched in 2007, the uk-based collection includes clothing, accessories, and leather jackets. featuring trendy details such as studs, brights and floral prints, the line is both romantic and edgy–ablend of motorcycle sharpness and girly couture.

If you’re into sienna’s style, try out twenty8twelve for a similar look. you can buy it online at twenty8twelve. Com, and while you’re there, make sure to check out savannah and sienna’s exclusive behind-the-scenes blog!

Why we love it

As a former model, sienna knows fashion: the girl always looks great, on or off the runway. especially admirable, however, is the collaboration with her big sis, savannah. with savannah designing and sienna lending her creative input and banging body, the team has created a fun and fearless collection. the combination of edgy materials and silhouettes coupled with feminine details make for plenty of gorgeous looks. best of all? almost every single one of the pieces are totally wearable–something satisfyingly unexpected. if you like what you see on sienna, you’ll probably love twenty8twelve.

L. A. M. B. by Gwen Stefani

Promotional Pictures from L. A. M. B. Spring 2010 RTW Collection.

Gwen stefani describes l. a. m. b. , which stands for love angel music baby, as a little bit of everything, noting “a little bit of sound of music, orange county chola girl, rastafarian rasta girl, and english great gatsby garden-party girls,” as her key influences.

Making its runway debut in 2004, l. a. m. b. is a multifaceted brand encompassing clothing and accessories, including amazing bags and shoes, as well as a perfume called simply “l. ” the collection has had huge commercial success in stores worldwide, and has attracted much celebrity acclaim. part of the line’s success may come from gwen’s fashion background: she comes from a family of seamstresses and is highly involved with the line.

Why we love it

Gwen was really the first celebrity to do high-fashion right. l. a. m. b. , her luxurious collection, was a far cry from the bejeweled tracksuits of its time. l. a. m. b. is always unexpected and fresh, often featuring bold patterns, bright colors and tribal influence. past collections, for example, have featured checkerboard, cheetah, and rasta patterns, though this season highlights zipper detail and oversized silhouettes.

The perfect look for a glam-rock princess, gwen’s line embodies hipster style paired with urban grunge. ms. stefani definitely brings her amazing personal style to this collection, and influences from her ska roots are almost always apparent. though gwen seems to have shifted her focus to her diffusion line, harajuku girls, l. a. m. b. ’s accessory line seems to be going strong. into high-quality leather goods with a little something extra? you’ll love l. a. m. b.

Favorite pieces

Product information: cinched blazer, dorset barcellon clutch, vail birdcage sandals, zip detail miniskirt – shopbop.

Inspired by l. a. m. b.

Product information: rachel pally bandage miniskirt, shopbop. patent oxford shoe-boot, newport news. victorian lace fullfoot tight, urban outfitters. twinkle zipper belt, shopbop. dolman sleeve knit top, forever 21.

House of Harlow 1960 by Nicole Richie

Nicole shows off her style in her own designs, wearing House of Harlow 1960 jewelry.

Like many of the lines on this list, house of harlow was named after a special someone–nicole’s daughter harlow winter kate madden. the line, which currently features jewelry and headbands with a 60′s feel coupled with a tribal vibe is set to expand, offering shoes and bags later this year. house of harlow 1960 embodies nicole’s bold style: the jewelry was made to layer and wear together. mixed media pieces, including enamel, leather, gold plate and resin create a collection that is interesting, eye-catching, and unique.

Why we love it

Though technically not a clothing line, nicole richie’s house of harlow 1960 accessory line deserves a mention on this list! nicole has embraced so many personalities over the years: from wild child party girl to celebutante bff to fashionista to mommy, things keep getting better and better for miss richie! nicole is one of those celebrities who always looks great, even if she’s wearing old jeans and a tank. part of her appeal? her love for accessories, of course! she piles on the bangles, loves on-the-head headbands, and rocks chunky statement rings like none other.

The real reason her collection rocks? it’s totally college-budget friendly with pieces starting at $20. i adore almost every piece in this line: the mix of geometric shapes, tribal styling, and a nod to vintage is perfection. if you’re a nicole fan like i am, make sure to look out for her contemporary clothing line winter kate, set to launch later this year!

Favorite pieces

Product information: cream leather garter bracelet, key cocktail ring, abalone stations necklace, gold plated sunburst cuff – shopbop.

Inspired by nicole and house of harlow

Product information: womens real straight jeans, gap. sunsets cliffs vest, hollister. chinese laundry belgium 1-morocco sandals, heels. com. braid wrap rhinestone bracelet, urban outfitters. jessica simpson teardrop stone cocktail ring, zappos. fitted scoop neck tee, james perse. rosary beaded necklace, forever 21.

What do you think? !

Do you have a favorite celebrity designer? do you own pieces from any of the lines i mentioned? are there any that i missed that you think deserve to be mentioned? which celebrity closet would you love to raid? let me know with your comments!

Meryl Streep Gives Graduation Speech at Barnard

in Life | June 21st, 2010 2 Comments

Meryl streep has been nominated for 16 academy awards, and won two, over her brilliant acting career. she’s one of america’s greats. but it hasn’t gone to her head. above, we have streep giving the graduation speech last month at barnard (the women’s liberal arts college affiliated with columbia university). and what comes across is someone who doesn’ttake herself or acting too seriously. someone who still gets a little charmingly nervous speaking in front of crowds. and someone who recognizes that we globally €“ and women particularly €“ have major challenges to contend with. it’s worth a watch, along with one of my favorite commencement speeches: steve jobs at stanford, 2005.

Would You Wear… Designer Temporary Tattoos?– College Fashion

I think these are a cool idea but like any type of tattoo sometimes you over due it … but if i want a tattoo i make the commitment to it and that it actually has meaning behind it – why would you want something on your body (temporary or Real) if it has no meaning?

Lauren has a simple bracelet tattoo – but does it have meaning or is she just wearing it because everyone else is?

2 October 5th, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Monique

Real > fake. and i’m going to spend anywhere for $25 up for fake ink? ! don’t think so. designer temp. tattoos are so trendy it hurts. how uncool would somebody look sporting a tattoo one week, and it’s gone the next? all because it’s chanel…

Get the Real thing or nothing at all. with the money you spent fattening a designer’s pockets you could go to a local shop and get some Real artwork done.

3 October 5th, 2010 at 2:13 pm

Christina

I think the temporary tattoos are a great idea for people who want to make a statement without having to go through the pain of Real ink.

I’m not a big fan of the tribal tattoos (Real or temporary) but i think the jewlrey tattoos are adorable. i don’t think you neccessarily need to have a meaning to get a temporary tattoo. they are just a great way to express individuality (because honestly how many people do you expect to see wearing a temp. tattoo? ).

4 October 5th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Kylie

I have to admit the idea does sound cool, but i am definitely not going to be wearing temporary tattoos or the Real tattoos because in my opinion i think they’re kind of tacky. i just want to stay away from them because they’re usually in black and it just adds a little bit of grunge to my look that i wouldn’t like. xoxo, kylie

5 October 5th, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Socialite14

I love the idea of a temporary tattoo so cool chanel is my favourite very cool ! ! ! !

6 October 5th, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Zephyr – cf editor

Monique – the tattoo prices were incorrectly listed in the article. they aren’t 25 dollars and up each – they come in packs – betsey johnson’s are 25 dollars and you get 95 tattoos, while chanel gives you 55 for $78. certainly still expensive but not exorbitantly so when you factor in how many you get for the money.

7 October 5th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Anna

Love it. Real tattoos are not for me, i just hate the idea of having something inked on to me permanently. the temporary ones look like a lot of fun, without the commitment! !

8 October 5th, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Melanie

I actually like this idea! in general i find tattoos pretty unattractive, unless they’re particularly unique or beautiful. i would never get one myself because i know that i’m not going to be happy with it in a few months, years or whenever. Can’t say i’ll be rushing out to buy some of these, but in theory i like it!

9 October 5th, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Danielle

Are these the only designers who have temporary tattoos for sale?

10 October 5th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Tessa

I love the idea. it’s like the nicer version of the childhood temporary tattoos. they can either be super cute or way too over the top. i would never get a Real tattoo but i have no aversion to these! :) thanks for the article!

11 October 5th, 2010 at 4:36 pm

Leigh

I like the idea of a temp tattoo especially if i’m wearing a particularly girly outfit that needs some edge, but is there anywhere else to get temp tattoos, that aren’t all designer brand?

12 October 5th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Josie

I’ve always liked temporary tattoos. i love the look of a small tribal tattoo, however, i don’t think i’d ever get a Real one – chances are i’d tire of it far too quickly, and i just wouldn’t like to make that sort of commitment. these temporary ones are awsome for when you just want something special for a night out, or a trip to warmer weather or so.

I’d personally never by a designer one, but hopefully this will make temp tattoos so popular that they’ll be easier to find in cheaper stores too!

13 October 5th, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Kelsey johnson

I love these! while they may not carry heartfelt “meaning,” i think they’re beautiful, unexpected accessories. the tribal ones don’t go with my personal style, but i think the jewelry ones would be a fun way to change up my look.

I’ve been keeping an eye on them since ashley greene appeared on the cover of seventeen wearing a bird one by chanel.

The chanel ones are a little pricey, but i’ll look in to the betsey johnson options.

14 October 5th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Cara

As if the stamping the sides of designer bags with logos were not sufficient, industrial fashion must now have human skin to brand, even temporarily? of course, not all the tattoos are obviously designer-linked, but many of them are.

Of course, i personally dislike all tattoos in all circumstances, but the designer branding causes me a new level of revulsion.

15 October 5th, 2010 at 5:54 pm

Lizzy

I’m with monique on the having a tat one week and not the next … i think this is great for the people who want to try tattoos out but i always tell people who are considering Real ink to not get something unless you have a reason/meaning… like some others mentioned above, they wouldn’t want to hate the Real tattoo after a month… you’d be like if you hated the temp because at least you can take that one off.

16 October 5th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Amanda

I love the idea! and plenty of people get tattoos that don’t necessarily have any meaning but are there just to look pretty. the chanel ones are quite delicate and nice-looking and i can see wearing one from time to time.

To me, permanent tattoos are just not the best of ideas. temporary tattoos are a great way to explore body art on more safe ground and without any unnecessary pain, or, god forbid, without possibly ending up with a tattoo artist who doesn’t know what they’re doing.

17 October 5th, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Anne

I actually think designer temp. tattoos are a brilliant idea. while i’m not a huge fan of the tribal designs or having a brands logo displayed on my arm, think the jewelry design ones are adorable. they’re also a good idea if you’re uncomfortable with the idea of something more permanent… or, as in my case, if you have very conservative parents who oppose tattoos for religious reasons and have made it very clear what the consequences will be if you actually do get one. i will say, though, that i would much rather take the money i would spend on temp. tattoos and instead save up for an actual necklace or bracelet from the designer in question that i’ll be able to wear for again and again, instead of spending it on a product that only has limited utility.

18 October 5th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Valeria

I love them! i want so badly one from chanel for my neck…

19 October 5th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Christina

I just thought of another reason why these are a great idea. some companies do not allow for tattoos to be visible. so throw this on for a girl’s night out and then clean it off for work the next day!

20 October 5th, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Jess

The idea is coolbut way too pricey. my cousin and i still put on temp tattoosevery summereven though i’m 20 and she’s 16. it’s just a fun way to play with ideas of what you’d look like with a tat. but, i am not willing to fork out that much for something that’s not going to last when i can just go to the dollar store and get some for much cheaper…

21 October 5th, 2010 at 10:28 pm

Mstrendy

I have tattoos but this will be the only way i will ever get another one.

22 October 5th, 2010 at 10:46 pm

23 October 6th, 2010 at 12:07 am

Amara

I love this! ! ! i Really want to get one. i would love to wear one.

24 October 6th, 2010 at 12:16 am

Cori

I don’t like it at all, but i don’t like regular tattoos either, so i might be biased

25 October 6th, 2010 at 12:26 am

Erica

I would probably only wear one if it was for a night out, cause those people wouldn’t know it was fake for the night. but in Reality, i wouldn’t spend money on these temporary tattoos just because they’re designer. plus, some of the selections i’ve seen aren’t appealing.

26 October 6th, 2010 at 11:42 am

Boo

Has everyone forgotten how gross these things look when they aren’t fully washed off and kinda faded?

That said i like seeing what a designer does when just faced with graphics and no silhouette or fabric.

27 October 6th, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Gracey

It’s a cool idea, but i don’t think i would pay $78 for something chanel that’s going to fade…maybe the betsey johnson ones thoughsince they are cheaper, even though there are less of them. i don’t know, i don’t think i would wear one just to school or something, but maybe some special occasion?

28 October 6th, 2010 at 11:34 pm

Rose

I think that these are a great idea and would certainly suit a lot of people. i know there are things that i would love to try out but am not willing to have on me permenantly, and this is a much easier way than drawing everything on in eyeliner! although (in my opinion) they aren’t the same as having a Real tattoo ( something that you love, that means something to you and that you have spent time developing and which becomes a part of who you are) they sound like a fun accessory for a friday or saturday night.

I love the idea of temp tatts. i’ve always liked the idea of having a Real tatt but i hate the idea of having it when i’m old (just personal view). i have been wearing some temp tatts from bodyart fashion that are just as great as the chanel ones but only $20 for about 50 designs and they last up to a week! ! i think i have seen them in sportsgirl too.

I think these are cool for a night out. it’s just a funky accessory. i might even consider them for something unexpected at my senior prom!

I have to disagree with you lizzy-there is this misconception from tattoo shows that every tattoo you have to have needs a “special” meaning, like the death of a parent, or a best friend pact, etc. however, lots of people do get tattoos for *gasp* aesthetic purposes. as an artist, i love that i can translate my art onto my skin and that other artist can also put a twist on my idea. as an art collector in general, i find it amazing that i can not only hang art on my walls but carry it around with me as well. tattoos are art-and they don’t have to have a lofty meaning besides your pure enjoyment of them.

That being said, i think beyonce looks gorgeous with her fake spinal cord, and i know kat von d and temptu collaborated to make some Really cool temporary tattoos also. if you like the look why not go for it? it’s just like if you were playing with an eyeshadow one day-it’s an adornment. for a girl who doesn’t want to be committed to ink they are a way to add a pop of excitement to an outfit-and who doesn’t want to be a little intriguing for a night?
