From CollegeCandy: 5 Must-Read Spring Break Safety Tips

Written by Zephyr – CF Editor Comment on Post

Editor’s note: the following post was written by our friends at collegecandy! before you click over, know that some readers found some of cc’s content/ads to be non-work-safe. thought you should know! now, on to the post.

Spring break is approaching quickly. soon, a number of the nationscollege students will be basking in the warm sunlight and frolicking inblue-green waters of the tropics. but before you pack your bikini andtuck your passport safely into your longchamp, take a minute to thinkabout safety. like, really think about it. between the daily violence in mexico and the general safety issues that could arise by merely being awayfrom home in a foreign country, its important that you take your safetyseriously.

I know, i sound like a helicopter parent and youre probably all,oh, that would never happen to me! but girl, you arent invincible!

I cant help but think about natalee holloway. she was a regular student, just like us, heading off to aruba for a vacation withher friends. and then tragedy struck. contrary to what youre convincingyourself, it could happen to any one of us, so now we must learn fromher tragic incident and take some safety precautions to stay safeabroad.

There are many safety tips we learned in elementary schooldonttrust strangers, always travel in groupsthat still hold true today. solets brush up on those rules to ensure a safe and memorable springbreak trip.

I dont think im in kansas anymore! you got it,dorothy, youre no longer in the good ole u. s. of a. you dont know asoul, besides your friends or your spring break group, and everyone (thecab driver, the guy selling knock-off purses on the corner, thebartender) seems like someone you can trust. while there are manytrustworthy people abroad, there are also many who prey on collegespring breakers. and why not? drunk, stumbling and toting expensivepurses full of cash, were easy targets. stay on your game, be aware ofyour surroundings and take precaution. this includes everything fromzipping your bag when you carry it to not walking home alone.

Speaking of which.

Go out together, come home together. yes, itsunderstandable that you may want to deviate from the group because youmet a cute guy, or you want to check out a cool club you discovered, butyou should never go places alone. yes, you do it all the time oncampus, but this is not your campus. you do not know these people andyou do not know this place. if you want to go somewhere, suggestchecking the place out with your group of friends; im sure they wouldthink its just as cool. and if youre tempted to cab it back to somerandos hotel for a night of fun, well, dont.

Wanna see the final three tips? click right here to read the rest!

The Best American Essays 2010: The Free Route

in Books | October 14th, 2010 1 Comment

The Best American Essays, 2010, edited by Christopher Hitchens, has now hit the stands. The 300-page collection runs $10. 47 online. However, know this: You can read most of the essays online for free. These essays were originally published on websites of major American journals & magazines, and there they still remain. Some notable mentions includeThe Murder of Leo Tolstoy: A Forensic Investigation by Elif Batuman,How Einstein Divided America’s Jews by Walter Isaacson,On John Updike by Ian McEwan,My Genome, My Self by Steven Pinker, and Guy Walks into a Bar by David Sedaris. Metafilter has pulled togethera full list of available texts. Kudos to them. And if you want to read these essays later on (when you actually have some time)give Instapaper a try. It’s a wonderful way to read texts in a clean format on the iPad, iPhone, and Kindle. The trusty web browser is always an option too.
