On 4626 york road in baltimore, a white sign reads, in bold print, «c-note: creating better opportunities to excel. «

At the entrance of this store stand three mannequins clothed in thermals and vests that say, «c-note. » here you will find a man with locks and a green-and-white shirt that reads «c-note. » he is christopher simon, 23, a morgan state university student and baltimore native. he is showcasing his new and highly anticipated c-note collection of women’s clothing apparel.

The urban wear clothing store was created in 1999 after simon, its ceo and founder, decided to use his passion for design and entrepreneurship to start a clothing line and benefit the community.

In «student life»

The C-Note clothing line has been heavily promoted. The NBA Portland Trail Blazers’ Juan Dixon wore C-Note clothing while visiting BET, State Property joined C-Note for a concert, and Fashion at Morgan, Morgan State’s official fashion design merchandising club, has heated up the runway with C-Note apparel.

Simon says he used his inventiveness to «basically fill a void that I thought and still think is in the clothing industry. I felt like I could use my creativity and versatility,» and he said one can see the difference in his sweatsuits and color schemes.

«I used to work at a screen printing shop,» he continued. «I would draw a bunch of designs but I never had the funds to produce my designs on the clothing. When my managers went outside, I would print my own shirts without them knowing. I sold it to my friends and family. »

With the support of friends and family, Simon was determined to create his own clothes.

«My mother bought me a sewing machine,» and observing the styles of his peers, he said he «noticed that clothing companies were coming out with ‘capris’ that were too short. In Baltimore, we wear pants and shorts long. I would buy sweatpants, cut it up, and take the hems out,» Simon said, speaking of men’s styles.

At the time, Simon was attending the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and alternated between his studies and his dream.

But the rural, poverty-striken environment did not provide a large enough market or great enough demand for his clothing.

He decided to return to Baltimore.

Simon transferred to Morgan, secured a $10,000 business loan, and opened his first store. He «would ride through the ‘hood—I mean drug-infested neighborhoods—trying to sell sweat hoods. I would sell my clothes in the back of a Geo Metro hatchback.

Simon has been able to serve his community through philanthropy.

He manages an intramural basketball team, donates to group homes, and is starting a nonprofit organization that will award annual $500 scholarships to two Morgan students majoring in marketing, entrepreneurship and fashion design.

In addition, Simon is contracting for a line of polo shirts and other golf apparel.

Beyonce’s «Irreplaceable» is playing in his store. Phone calls inquire about the C-Note female clothing line launch. People steadily enter and exit. Simon remains humble and goal oriented as he talks about his dreams.

«Five years from now, I see C-Note clothing being distributed in department stores like Bloomingdales. I don’t ever plan to work for nobody,» he says.

Catherine Sudue, a student at Morgan State University, writes for the Spokesman.

Gossip Girl Fashion – Seasons 3 & 4: Vanessa Abrams

Written by Rachel – Northeastern 14 Comments

Over the past couple weeks, we’ve been updating our original series on gossip girl fashion. so far, i’ve broken down blair waldorf and serena van der woodsen‘s styles during seasons 3 and 4, with some budget-friendly pieces to help you get their looks. this week, vanessa abrams, everyone’s favorite lower east side-looking hipster, and her fabulous style get the spotlight!

Like the other gossip girl ladies, vanessa’s style has definitely evolved since her season 1 style – over seasons 3 and 4, her look has matured quite a bit. so whether she’s been your favorite style icon since season 1, or her newer look is more your style, here are some tips on how to dress like vanessa and steal her look.

Vanessa’s New Style

Gone are the days of neon pink nike high-tops and kinky, crazy curls. vanessa’s style is still definitely rooted in the artistic, trendy streets of the lower east side – but as she’s matured, her style has as well. these days, she always finds a way to make mis-matched styles and prints look like they were made to be worn together.

Like the other girls on the show, vanessa is no stranger to formal events. however, she doesn’t play it safe with pretty dresses – she always lets her true style shine through.

Vanessa’s Fashion Essentials

Ok, to be fair, vanessa’s closet staples haven’t changed too much from the first season. prints and form-fitting jeans are still her go-to’s for day and night. the difference (and the reason why she’s still such a style inspiration) is that she puts the same pieces together in new ways each season.

Skinny jeans

Although there are still some disbelievers out there, i’m a strong supporter of skinny jeans. and vanessa is proof that a great pair of skinnies is a super versatile fashion staple for any young woman. a few years ago, she was pairing her denim with bright sneakers and collegiate jackets. these days, vanessa sticks to cute boots, funky flats and printed tanks to complement her jeans.

Mix-and-match prints

Printed skirts, scarves and tops have always been some of vanessa’s favorite pieces. mixing prints has been a huge trend on the runways these past few seasons, and the look has found its way onto the gossip girl stars as well.

The best way to get vanessa’s mix-and-match look is to not be afraid to experiment! go through your closet and try a striped top on with a floral skirt, or a tie-dye tank with a tribal-print skirt. i promise, you’ll be surprised what outfits have been hiding in your closet all this time.

Unique jackets

Since the cold weather months are quickly approaching, i thought it would be fitting to take some inspiration from vanessa for how to bundle up in style.

In keeping with the rest of her style choices, vanessa chooses statement coats and jackets that really make an outfit (as opposed to just covering it up). think fun prints, interesting fabrics and unique cuts. another great tip to take from the gossip girl episodes is to always strive for balance in your look. if vanessa’s jacket is brightly-colored, she balances it with dark denim. for a large or loose coat, she sticks to tights or leggings to show off her legs!

Vanessa’s New Hairstyles

Photos courtesy of The CW and Jessica Szohr Network

Vanessa still sticks to natural hairstyles, but her season 3 and 4 looks are definitely more grown-up and classy than her old-school crunchy-with-product curls and high buns.

Like blair and serena, she has embraced the loose curls look as her hair has gotten longer. but when it isn’t down, vanessa’s go-to hairstyle is a low ponytail. when it comes to hair, she always manages to look put-together while still avoiding the up-tight perfection of the upper east side girls.

Tying it All Together

Vanessa’s style has definitely changed and evolved over the past few seasons – but she still exudes hipster-chic. she’s a great inspiration for remixing your existing wardrobe to find new, fun ways to wear things. it’s easy to mix some of vanessa’s look into yours – to start, try adding different prints, funky jewelry and unexpected fabrics. at the end of the day, her style is all about creativity and personality.

What do you think about vanessa’s style evolution? she’s often been one of those characters that you either love or hate, but it’s hard to deny that she has a great sense of style. do you prefer her artistic, hipster vibe to blair and serena’s more luxurious looks? i love hearing your insights and opinions! be sure to leave a comment.

Jon Stewart V. Cnbc, Or The Failure Of The Financial Media

While i enjoy watching cramer every night, one must remember the show is primarily entertainment. the financial networks exist to promote their advertisers financial and investment products. who would expect them to warn about the credit bubble or coming washington national debt collapse which will destroy much of the remaining private wealth in america today or what this will do to the dollar, the stock market, bonds, gold or the real estate market?

China is now worried about their dangerous over investment in us treasury obligations. washington €™s long-term choice is either repudiation or monetization. for monetization to be effective, the depreciation in the dollar would have to be substantial and this in turn would dramatically raise prices of imports for american consumers which would mean a tremendous drop in foreign imports. debt monetization would cause more disruption to exporting nations than selective repudiation of treasury debt.

The campaign to cancel the washington national debt by 12/22/2013 constitutional amendment is starting now in the u. s. see: http://www. Facebook. Com/group. Php? gid=67594690498&ref=ts

A lot of suMMer weddings are outdoors so i’d avoid all of the heels listed here. go with wedges or flats, unless you want your heels to be sinking into the ground all night. love the retro look!

2 July 14th, 2010 at 5:51 pM

Milana

I really like the first dress – has a vintage vibe to it! love the shoes in the second look! the third look is Maybe a little too casual even for a casual wedding… Maybe if paired with soMe other shoes – a little heel goes a long way :)

3 July 14th, 2010 at 6:09 pM

Love the first dress! ! ! sooo cute, sophisticated, chic, and appropriate! :)

That’s not black tie appropriate, That’s for cocktail attire.

7 July 14th, 2010 at 7:24 pM

Tara

HMMM…these are all really pretty outfits…and cute dresses…but if we’re supposed to dress slightly More conservatively out of respect for the event, then why are they all so teeny tiny in length? those would definitely ride up when sitting down…i don’t know if these are an appropriate length, especially that first one. i can iMagine yanking it down all day/night to Maintain My Modesty! ;-)

Great post ali! ! i especially love that zac posen for target dress–ahh i feel like every tiMe a great target collaboration coMes out i’M unfortunately broke! !

Ali – university of Missouri

@l – though a lot of weddings are outside during the suMMer, that doesn’t necessarily Mean you’ll be stoMping through grass or sand. Most weddings will have paths or floors put down. if you’re worried about wearing heels, just swap theM out for cute flats!

@kristen – you could definitely wear that to black tieblack tie doesn’t Mean floor-length especially when you’re young! it’s totally appropriate for a girl in her teens or twenties to wear a frilly cocktail-length dress to a black-tie event.

@tara – i Mentioned in the post that if you’re worried about being conservative, bring along a shawl or cardigan! the last dress is also a good option, or another like it, because it’s not strapless or revealing. but all these dresses are standard length for party dresses these days: unless you go full-length, fashionable dresses are usually just above the knee or Mid-thigh. when you’re young, it’s totally acceptable to wear this length without looking tarty.

Thanks everyone for coMMenting!

Annaz

Wtf is up with these heels? hasn’t anyone read vogue froM last Month? kitten heels are back :) gladiator Monster heels are out and cute, 1950′s-like heels are sooo cute! they look way better and are better for you. plus: youcan actually dance in theM! isn’t dancing and fun what Makes weddings fun?

11 July 14th, 2010 at 8:54 pM

Ali – university of Missouri

@Annaz – If you just saw a new trend in Vogue, then it will be a while before that look gains popularity and trickles down to inexpensive retail outlets. This post is Outfits Under $100! I would have done a lot More if I could have hit up designer boutiques :)

And personally, i hate kitten heels! they don’t do anything for your legs – high heels are Much More flattering. plus stilettos (especially black puMps) are never really out! !

Thanks for coMMenting!

12 July 14th, 2010 at 10:13 pM

Kirsten

Ali, My naMe is not kristen. and where i’M froM, your knees should be covered if it’s a black tie affair. a relative of Mine just got Married and it was black tie, so we had to figure everything out and Make sure we were all on the saMe page. cocktail attire is More like what you posted.

13 July 14th, 2010 at 10:17 pM

Kirsten

And i thought i should add that black tie occasions are always in the evening, so before say 6pM, then cocktail attire would be totally appropriate. :)

Great tips! i thought they were all spot on! :)

Lalalina

I liked all of the outfits except nuMber 3, that way More like a barbecue outfit instead of soMething to wear to a wedding. i think the shoes in outfits 2 and 4 are a little stripperish, and that is because they are froM a website that sells club wear. i agree that black heels go with everything, but those are not classy looking.

I also agree that dresses should hit just above your knee or at your knee for weddings. save the short frocks for a friday or saturday at a bar

17 July 14th, 2010 at 11:31 pM

Ali – university of Missouri

@kirsten, so sorry i Misspelled your naMe, i was typing fast earlier! personally, i really don’t think black tie = a dress beneath your knees. but i generally don’t like following rules! :)

The terM “black tie” refers only to Men’s apparel (tuxedos) so in My experience, woMen’s attire at black tie events is often based on local custoM or current fashions.

How was your relative’s wedding? what did you end up wearing?

Thanks for coMMenting! :)

SoMe weddings are very casuallike a short cereMony on a beach or a backyard bbqwhich is why i included outfit #3. i wanted to span different dress codes because not all weddings are fancy. since l Moved to Missouri, i’ve noticed lots of weddings here are More casual than back at hoMe in chicago. it’s interesting how things different around the country!

19 July 15th, 2010 at 12:22 aM

Kirsten

The wedding was good! i ended up wearing a strapless navy tea length dress and played it up with soMe fun accessories. i guess the safest bet is to ask what exactly they Mean when they say black tie to avoid any confusion. :)

A good rule of thuMb for the length of your dress/skirt for a religious or conservative event is that when you are sitting down, the heMline should either cover your knees or hit right above theM. Mid-thigh length is siMply not appropriate if you wish to be respectful.

One More rule i would have added: if you can, try to find out the wedding colors beforehand and steer clear of theM, especially if you want to wear a solid-colored dress. wearing the saMe color as the bridesMaids isn’t necessarily wrong, but it tends to look odd, like you didn’t do your hoMework.

Love the shoes on outfits 1, 3, and 4, though i would go with a lower heel in general to reflect the often More conservative feeling of weddings.

There seeMs to be soMe controversy surrounding the “black tie” dress. while yes, a cocktail dress is appropriate for a black-tie event (although a good general rule of thuMb is that the later the event, the More forMal, so a black tie wedding that starts at 7 or 8pM is More likely to call for a long gown than a 5pM black tie wedding), i would avoid wearing soMething like you posted to a wedding for the saMe reason i wouldn’t wear white…the dress just screaMs “look at Me” too Much and would Make Me feel like i was trying to upstage the bride.

Outfits 1 and 4 are My favorites. both seeM really pretty without being overly attention-getting.

26 July 15th, 2010 at 9:59 aM

Jec

Wow love the outfits! especially the first one, really love how the heels coMpleMent the dress! :)

Yup i’M attending a wedding at the end of this Month, and usually i’M not a color person but i’M taking your advice to play with colors! i think i’M going to wear a turquoise grecian-wrap dress that hits dress above My knee, with a black waist band thingy.

I really don’t know what kind of shoes and accessories to Match the turquoise and black though, since this is the first tiMe i’M wearing such a bold color (to Me)!

27 July 15th, 2010 at 10:27 aM

Elle sees

I lurk daily but rarely coMMent but i love this blog! even though i’M not in college, i love it. cute stuff.

28 July 15th, 2010 at 10:42 aM

M

ditto shaney – a dress that hits Mid-thigh is definitely NOT appropriate for a wedding, unless Maybe the wedding’s in vegas! That’s definitely showing too Much leg.

&aMp; while the dress for outfit #2 is pretty, it’s loud and an attention-getter, just by nature of the color &aMp; soMething to avoid so as not to upstage the bride.

29 July 15th, 2010 at 10:53 aM

Books, sweat, and trends

I think the styling depends More on the specific wedding than anything else.

For exaMple, at My aunt’s wedding, guests had to dress More conservatively because it took place in a Catholic church. Also, the Majority of the guests were older (and therefore More conservative). There was only one girl who wore a dress that hit Mid-thigh, rather than knee-length or just-above-the-knee length, and she stuck out like a sore thuMb. SoMe of the guests were distracted by her attire!

Conversely, at a friend’s wedding, the venue wasn’t conservativeand the general guest list was younger. Therefore, it didn’t look out of place to wear a shorter dress and it fit the dance-club atMosphere the couple was going for.

Its all about doing your hoMework and finding out what is expected. However, I think its always better to dress More conservatively if you are unsure. Nobody is going to bat an eye if you wear a longer dress than Most others. But if you wear one That’s way too short, you’re going to steal the spotlight froM the bride!

Not every party dress hits Mid-thigh. If you look around, you can definitely find a More conservative dress. Personally, I wouldn’t wear a short dress to Most weddings, unless it was super super casual.

30 July 15th, 2010 at 11:50 aM

Ali – university of Missouri

@jec – since your dress sounds like it’s a bold color, i would suggest parred down jewelry. you can’t go wrong with silver!

Thanks for coMMenting!

Ali,

I have a weird situation and I’M wondering if a certain dress that I had in Mind would be appropriate, Two of My friends are getting Married next weekend at the courthouse. They’re not having an actual wedding, but they are having a party after the courthouse. It’s an outdoor party taking place at night. I have a white Maxi dress with gray and black flower print on it. I was planning on wearing it with black shoes and a black cardigan. Do you think that would be okay?

Thanks! great post by the way.

32 July 15th, 2010 at 12:45 pM

Ali – university of Missouri

@Shannon – Is the gray and black floral print large? Does it cover Most of the dress or is the dress noticeably white? Wearing white is frowned upon at a weddingespecially in a Maxi dress, which could invoke a bridal gown lookbut if the dress is printed and you’re also wearing a cardigan, I think it will be OK. You May be hot in a Maxi dress though!

In terMs of dressing for a courthouse wedding, just wear soMething you would wear to court or workprofessional and respectful. You could definitely wear the outfit you described :)

Thanks for coMMenting! I hope you have fun at your friend’s wedding! !

Great post, keep it coMing ! :-) I totally agree about the research thing. I went to My cousin’s wedding recently and only the grooM’s friends wear wearing really short dresses and high heels, not exactly appropriate… Not wearing white is quite obvious but soMe people seeM to forget it. I also have a probleM with people wearing black to a wedding (if ever you want to coMe to Mine, keep this in Mind. ;-) ).

Wardrobe Remix: 2 Looks Inspired by Musical Mash-Ups

Written by Moriah – Vanderbilt 16 Comments

Music and fashion have always been intrinsically linked. from elvis’s rock n’ roll jumpsuits to lady gaga’s avant-garde get-ups, Musicians have always been proponents of new and groundbreaking trends. their fans have followed suit, and many a ridiculous fashion trend has been started by a celebrity: m. c. hammer pants anyone?

So It’s only fitting that today, when we love to mix up our wardrobes (flowy tops with a boyfriend blazers, yess), that the Musical mash-up phenomenon is sweeping college campuses across the country. if you aren’t familiar with the genre, a mash-up is basically two or more unrelated songs mixed up into one awesome track. i love that in one fell swoop i can hear a current top 40 hit, a song reminiscent of middle school dances, and a classic rock song.

Below, i’ve picked two of my favorite Mash-ups and created outfits inspired by each of them. check out the youtube videos, take a listen, and get ready to get a Great idea for the next time you need a quirky outfit to spice up your look.

Mash-up Look #1: Inspired by “Still Bleeding” (Super Mash Bros. )

Still bleeding has everything i need to get pumped for a night out: it has a jock jams flashback mixed with pitbull, fergie, madonna, and katy perry. kind of amazing!

Inspired by the jock jams theme, i pulled a classic varsity letter jacket, while of course the crazy yellow tulle skirt is straight-up madonna circa the 1980′s. i’m sure pitbull would approve of the sky-high heels, while the zip-up corset top looks like It’s right out of a fergie Music video. the look gets its finishing touches with an adorable bright blue headband that totally embodies the coquette persona of katy perry.

Product information: headband – forever 21, luxirie varsity women’s jacket – tilly’s, apple bottom cropped vest – getthelabel, super lovers tulle tutu – maruione. jp, jessica simpson lizza pump – heels. com

Mash-up Look #2: Inspired by “What It’s All About” (Girl Talk)

Putting together a look inspired by what It’s all about was a bit more difficult since gregg gillis, the mastermind behind girl talk, uses an absurdly high number of clips in his Mash-ups. in fact, this particular selection has 36 different songs mixed in!

Clearly there was no way i could make an outfit using one piece inspired by each song. so instead i channeled the overall vibe of the song: street rap meets classic rock with an old school twist. the magenta high-top nikes really make this outfit, but the studded blazer, colorful bangles, and fedora will guarantee that just like the artists featured in this mash-up, you’ll Never get lost in the crowd.

Product information: fedora – forever 21, bangles – monsoon, turquoise top – forever 21, pyramid lapel jacket – forever 21, frayed denim shorts – queen’s look, nike hijack mid brilliant magenta – ssense

What are your thoughts?

Are you a mash-up fan? if so, do you prefer chiddy bang or milkman? do you like the fashion challenge of basing an outfit around a mash-up? leave a comment!

Also, if you want more Music-inspired fashion, you must check out megan’s post on vampire weekend-inspired fashion!

This is a super creative idea! i actually (and kind of strangely) like the Music on the first clip. the outfit would require someone a lot more daring then me to pull it off.

Dj earworm is my favorite mash up artist, you can download his songs for free on his website, and he’s the guy that makes the united states of pop each year. what a fun article! ! ! i’d love to see more like this

I am sooo inspired by the first outfit. i’ll go see if i can borrow my friend’s letterman jacket and wear it with a frilly skirt i got at charlotte russe last month. (i’m going to get a lot of stares…and maybe some criticism…but hey! it’ll be something fun/adventurous to do)

This is a fantastic idea. i adore mashups and the idea of Music inspired fashion. keep on pumping those beats and looks out for me! i dig it as much as i adore girl talk. you should do a piece on ‘play your part,’ if you feel inspired by gt. if not milkman is always a safe mashup bet! hahaha. much fashion//Music love! <3

I’m looking at the first outfit again and i think thatalthough nice you could replace the pumps with a pair of all-stars and pair it with leggings to create a more electro look of the 80′s. i just got back from europe and it was all the rage over there, everyone seems to be pushing that style right now. i jussssssssst finished blogging about the all-stars actually!

The Great thing about those shoes is that It’s unisex. so you and your boyfriend can rock them! what do you girls about the substitution?

I really enjoyed this post. i truly believe that Music and fashion both inspire one another. Mash-ups are the best because you can combine two or more completely different styles of Music and get one awesome piece. It’s exactly like fashion in that sense. It’s all about being creative and expressing who you are. It’s important that we don’t lose who we are to some fad. Music will always be a comfort zone, and our clothing should be as well.

I agree christina! Music and fashion are a form of self expression, and that is why they fuse so well together. people are often inspired to dress like members of their favourite bands because the lines for the two arts (fashion and Music) are often blured.
